We are happy to share this note and pictures from School District #27, regarding their WL Community Forest Grant for the 2021 Junior Fire Crew.

The 2021 Junior Fire Crew was made up of 20 dedicated and hardworking students.  The rigorous training schedule, facilitated by the Cariboo Fire Centre, began on December 2nd, 2021 and went through the end of April, 2021.  In past years the Cariboo Fire Centre has committed to hiring up to 4 students from the Junior Fire Crew Program, this year when training was complete, students were eligible to apply for 1 of 8 coveted summer positions as wildland firefighters.

While in the program students received training in: Occupational First Aid Level 1, Transportation Endorsement, WHMIS, Resume Writing, Fire Entrapment Avoidance, Communications, S-100, Pumps, Navigation, Tree Species and Danger Tree Assessment, Chainsaw Awareness, Burning and Heavy Equipment, Bear Awareness, Helicopter Use and Safety, and more.  Attendance at all training sessions was mandatory and was scheduled  after school, on weekends, and over one week of spring break.

School District No. 27 and the Cariboo Fire Centre are grateful for the financial support of the Williams Lake Community Forest.  This year’s $5,000 WLCF grant provided Occupational First Aid Level 1 and Transportation Endorsement to participating students – Thank you!!
