Fencing for the Future: Big Lake Community Association is building a safer and stronger community

The Big Lake Community Association’s Hall has long been a cornerstone for fostering community spirit, good citizenship, and cultural activities. More recently, the need to upgrade the perimeter fence became clear, as the existing fence had long outlived its service, no longer effectively keeping livestock to range-land but posing safety concerns. This upgrade was driven by the desire to ensure the property remains safe, well-maintained, and suitable for community events.

The WLCF’s generous support has enabled the BLCA to pursue its goals of improved safety, aesthetics, and functionality. However, the project faced some challenges including wet conditions that initially delayed fence installation in the spring. Despite this, the volunteers of the BLCA rose to the occasion, clearing debris, trees, and stumps to prepare the site for the new fence line.

In addition to the new fence, a significant benefit has been the creation of a firebreak around the caretaker house, which helps mitigate the risk of wind-thrown trees potentially damaging the community center building. The upgraded fence will prevent livestock from roaming on the property, ensuring the grounds are clean and well-maintained. This is especially important for keeping the land ready for special events, such as the busy wedding season!
